Are you ready for Bloodstock Open Air 2013?

Bloodstock Open Air 2013With festival season well underway we now find ourselves less than 5 weeks away from the UK’s finest heavy metal offering in Derbyshire at Bloodstock Open Air 2013. Whether you’ve already got your ticket or you’re yet undecided, our heavy metal correspondent Nick Malone takes a closer look at some bands away from the obvious at the top of the bill that you’re absolutely not going to want to miss.

    Municipal Waste

Formed in 2001 in Richmond, Virginia and well known for their loud, drunken, party atmosphere and rowdy show attendees, Municipal Waste are set to tear the main stage apart on Friday at Bloodstock. Expect a thrash performance with a difference, complete with giant inflatables being used as crowd surfing vehicles, and be sure to come along if you were ‘Born to Party’.

    3 Inches of Blood

A band’s physical appearance and name can often lead you to make an accidental judgement on their sound without ever hearing them. For me this was certainly the case with 3 Inches of Blood. Much to my surprise though, I discovered a kind of dream come true scenario where an 80’s Rob Halford fronts a power metal band. Make sure you get yourself out of your tent for their early slot on the main stage on Saturday, you won’t be disappointed and they’ll most certainly perk you up for the rest of the day.

    Hell

Much like many of the other bands from the NWOBHM era, Derbyshire born Hell sadly parted ways and drifted off the radar back in 1987 after a steady decline in popularity for the movement. However, also like a lot of their counterparts, they gained recognition through underground tape trading throughout the 90’s and later on through the internet, which let to their reuniting in 2008 and a record deal with Nuclear Blast. Hell were well ahead of their time both musically and stage show wise, so be sure to stick around directly after 3 Inches of Blood on the Saturday for a real treat.

    Xentrix

Across 4 releases, various lineup changes and even calling it a day before reuniting a few times, 2013 sees British thrash pioneers Xentrix back on tour and potentially with some new material coming soon also. Fresh off their tour with Evile and Kreator, this 4 piece from Preston will be bringing their humble performance to the Sophie Lancaster stage when they sub-headline the Friday night, no doubt equipped with their cover of the Ghostbuster’s theme for good measure.

    Wolfsbane

Having reformed in 2010 after a 16 year break, ex Iron Maiden frontman Blaze Bailey brings his original group to headline the Sophie Lancaster stage on Sunday night in the form of cult rockers Wolfsbane. If you’re looking to get away from the ‘Blue Sky’ of the main festival grounds, don’t much fancy watching Slayer and you want to bang your head to some stripped down ballsy metal, then head inside the tent for a guaranteed electric atmosphere and enthusiastic stage show.

Bloodstock takes place at Catton Park, Derbyshire from Thursday 8th - Sunday 11th August. Weekend camping tickets can be purchased now for the incredible price of £135 at the link below. Very limited day tickets are also available.
